My maxima from Tuamotu arrived from Live Aquaria yesterday. Incredible color. :yay: About 6" long. Here's a couple quick pics. Click for larger version:

That's a good idea! :shades:

That's one thing about clams- they can look fantastic from the top, but much different through the glass. Always look at the clam through the glass when buying, if you can....

Very pretty. You've had some big ones, if memoy serves.....maybe a gigas?
Dave

I lost them all 8-9 months ago. Mass die off of about 12 clams in two weeks, and finally my gigas a month or two later. I left the tank without clams for the next 8 months to make sure whatever may have been in the system was out and have started repopulating. This one and the 8" teardrop next to it are among the first in that repopulation. I'm going for a clam garden...

Beautiful. How come clams looks different through the glass? and BTW Chris, what glass are you talking about ;)

Can we get a more blury pic please? :D

I want about a dozen of those for an arch in my tank. Those are some sweet clams! Nice pick up Mojo

At least you still have another arm and leg. :) beautiful pick up.

Are you going to pick up some Coris wrasses or so this time? As you know I am going to make sure I a have a few pyramillid eating wrasses to keep my garden pest free. I even caught the yellow coris in my sump the other day.

Mr. Mojo, that is one of the most beautiful specimens and colors of blue I have ever seen. I bet seeing it in person is like viewing the impossible. Thanks for sharing. I hope you enjoy this little gem for many years!

I'm not sure. My guess is that the mantle is textured, and so light is reflected differently if viewed from the side vs. the top. You usually see very vibrant colors from the top, but they fade on the side. It's very hard to find a clam that's truly blue from the front - they usually end up purple.

Glass/acrylic/whatever... ;)

Yeah, yeah. Shooting through 3/4" acrylic at any angle other than straight-on means that any pics get distorted...

Just give Live Aquaria a call. Though I think a dozen would run you around $6k.... :confused2:

I have a red headed solon fairy wrasse, and want to get another wrasse that's in the same family. They should be just as effective.

Thanks for the compliments - it's rare that I'm this excited over adding something to my tank anymore! :o

An avatar change may be forthcoming... :D I just checked TRT, and I joined there (and the ARC) in 4/2004. My avatar was set shortly thereafter, which means that it's around 5 1/2 years old. Time for a change.... Maybe just an update.... :)

I rememberd Dana Riddle's article on clam coloration (jmaneyapanda, thank you). They contain iridophore's that act like an oil film on water and diffract light. Their color is an illusion. The angle is different from top to sides of the aquarium, so the colors appear differently as well. I can only assume that the glass/acrylic would cause similar changes, as well.
