Hey all, I've been lurking a few weeks now and finally have the incentive to step out of the shadows.

I'm pretty new to the salt water hobby, just a few months now. I've never had the courage before, but when your friend moves away and gifts you his 36g bow front, you don't have a lot of excuses left.

As for the particulars of my system...

It currently has some sort of clown fish (orange with yellow stripes, thin white stripes separate the yellow and orange), 2 shrimp (different species), a sea cucumber and a crimson crab. And of course the obligate bristle worms.

The corals are my weakness, a pulsating zenia that keeps going downhill on me. A nice mat of some sort of leather, a supposed mushroom (but I doubt it) and 2 other soft corals that I'm totally clueless on.

Filter is a modest sized in tank power head with 2 articulating arms to direct water flow. Lighting is a quad T5 with 2 actinic and 2 10K white.

I appreciate the welcome I've received so far and I look forward to hanging around here in the future.

I think i saw you checking out some corals at Optimum Aquarium this weekend?? I heard something about a 36 bow there - that was my first tank!

Some tanks grow zenia, some dont - mine doesnt and some say thats a good thing!

awesome gift:up:.welcome to the club im new to salt water tanks aswell and believe me if you need info this is the best place to get it.I have learned so much info from these members and my tank couldn't be better.

ok, as requested here are some pics. I apologize ahead of time for my lack of photographic skills.

It'd be really helpful if anyone can help me i.d the mystery corals I have in this tank.

First pic: branching hammer on the right, looks like green star polyps in the middle, mushrooms on the left.

Second pic: maroon clown, nice colors!

Fifth pic: Candy Cane

Seventh Pic: Xenia.

Oh, and welcome!

Awesome, i finally have some names to go with these other than "that green thing in the corner."

A couple of follow on questions then.

The green star polyp is a type of leather coral, right?

And all of the corals are soft corals, right?

Not a leather, but a softie. It grows in a purplish mat over rocks and sticks polyps out during daytime hours. If they're not green, probably old lights.

The Hammer and Candy cane are LPS (Large Polyped Stony) corals and require decent amounts of light.

Depending on how old the bulbs are, it might be time for replacements, and if they're the stock bulbs that came with the light fixture, you probably want to replace them anyways...

Thanks for the tip about the lights. they are the stock lights are and are about 3 months old now.

Glad to know I have stony's in there. I was treating everything like it was a a soft coral.

Iirc, they like lots of light, so keeping them higher in the tank is preferred.

Do the stony corals need special food vs. the soft corals?

No relation I know of.. LOL..

Looking good! Don't worry about Xenia.. Some people have no luck with it at all and some can't kill the rotten stuff!

Welcome!

Not necessarily, though you can feed them to get more growth. Squirt some mysis in the frogspawn during the day when it's expanded, and feed the candy cane at night when its feeder tentacles are out.

You will also want to keep an eye on your calcium levels because as they build their skeletons, they will use calcium up.

Pleasure to help if needed. Good start btw, the corals seem to be doing well. Keep up the water changes.

Welcome to the forum Bombay.

Welcome (again!)

Green Star Polyps are actually a type of gorgonian. They're pretty bulletproof :)
