Hello guys and gals and all other ocean junkies! My name is Davis and I am a college student based out of savannah Georgia (for now). I was raised until I was 21 in Cherokee county and I live here in savannah with my parents till I graduate and enter the Cyber Security industry. My long term goals are to achieve a standing in the IT field working in a form of penetration testing, and to maintain a SPS dominated 4ftx4ft cube tank in a decently sized house (haha)

I gained an interest in reef keeping around the age of 13 and I used to mow lawns to be able to afford my tank at the time. after a few years I had to tear down and it wasnt until last year that I decided I could afford to maintain a tank and really invest time into it.

In October of 2020, I purchased a nuvo 14 and set it up. I let it cycle, had a single occeleris clownfish and decided that wasnt enough for me. four months later, I purchased a Nuvo 20 peninsula and started that as well. I thought after a month of it running, i was safe to transfer my livestock to the tank. It was lit by 4x24 t5, had about double the amount of live rock and sand and my parameters were stable. a month later I went out of town, everything was growing well including many sps frags that had fully encrusted. then while I was out of town, My lights had been stuck on for three days straight causing a temperature spike above 86, and the corals to all bleach from the shift in temperature and over exposure to new lighting. I lost almost everything. that tank has remained FOWLR. the 14 is holding strong with only a small pest flatworm problem now that is being resolved as you read this posting. the 20 is leaving shortly and being replaced with a 2ftx2ft cube that will be my new sps dominated display, and because of the loss due to malfunction, I have taken my decent electronic and programming skills and turned those into what is commonly known as a REEFPI. this controller is very similar to an Apex unit, but at a fraction of the cost and falls well within my college budget, so I am excited to see how well it helps me maintain my system.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to make plenty of connections and get to learn from all of you.

Davis.

Welcome to the ARC! Please feel free to post pictures of your system. We all love to see pictures of others systems.

Welcome! Interesting about the REEFPI, i assume the common person probably wouldnt be able to accomplish something like that on their own? Might be something Im interested in doing.

REEFPI is a super cool system, I had to do some digging to really find the most user friendly options for it, and there seems to be some "almost Plug and Play units" available through ROBOTANK and similar. feel free to PM me and we can chat about it or I will do a build thread on it as well. theyre fairly simple but can be as complex as you want it to be, and some people have even built their own auto testing stations to fit with it all. I dont see myself going that far, but I am going to be using it for PH, temp, auto dosing, ATO, backup lighting control for my T5 hybrid setup, and remote monitoring, while all this can be done for under 250 rather than the average apex cost of 500+

Welcome @dlambs to the world of mega questions. "What is that?, Where did that come from?, Why did this happen?, I followed the instructions but it doesn't work!...Why?" Never fear. Most of the crazy things that happen in reef keeping has happened to a lot of us on this forum. No question concerning your reef is crazy or out of range here. Someone is bound to have an answer or can refer you to a source for the answer. Again, welcome to one of the premier reef clubs in the country. There are some great folks here!
