My family decided to start a reef tank in January, it was going to be no big deal, just use a friends old small tank and have a couple of clowns or something. I had a tank in the early 2000s and we bought "real" live rock right out of the ocean, there was no dry rock cycling. We used tap water and conditioner for a while. Did pretty well, and it was fun. So some things have changed getting back into it now.
It turns out we got a little carried away in comparison to the "plan". The tank is around 4 months old now and growing coralline like crazy and has stable parameters. We are all enjoying it and its a fun family activity so that part of the plan worked perfectly. Looking forward to it developing and maybe moving to a larger tank in the next year.
