Today I decided to hook up my rodi unit as my tank is ready to start being filled. This being said I need help. I have used a ro unit before but never paid attention to how it gets hooked up or actually runs.
So from my understanding I have the unit hooked up correctly (water spicket to the sediment filter, then to goes through two carbon blocks, then to the ro membrane, then from membrane to two DI resin tubes, then clean water?) Where I am getting hung up is the waste water line, on my RODI has a shut off valve on it. If it is closed I have no waste and produce water but if I have it open I am getting about 5g of waste to about 1/2g clean. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a flow restrictor in your waste line?
Pop it off from membrane canister and look in the line, presumably before the shutoff valve.
You should see something in there.
Maybe it's backwards?
FWIW, i've never had a shutoff valve on my waste line, either it's on the water in line, or an auto shut off valve (ASOV) with a float on the clean water out.
10 gallons of waste for 1 gallon of clean is not right.
With a single membrane it's more like 4 to 1.

Or maybe you need to put the shutoff valve before the membrane, so you've put the flow restrictor before the membrane?
Like switched them?
Either way, find the flow restrictor.
It's a long skinny thing that fits into the tubing.
There are also large in-line flow restrictors, but you didn't mention one.

Here's a picture of one

After looking in all of the tubing the only type of water restriction is the blue ball valve sort of thing on the waste line. Could it be that maybe I need to find the right position for it? (Half closed maybe)

I'm also planning on adding a inline tds and a pressure gauge so maybe I could add a restrictor myself?

Also thank you for the fast posts! Helps a lot!

If you don't have a flow restrictor, buy one that matches your ro output, 75 or 90, or whatever it is.
Like 9 bucks on Amazon.
I do not suggest to use a ball valve as a flow restrictor.

I got one on order. Should be here in a couple of days. Thanks again!
