I am new to Atlanta and to salt water aquariums. I just purchased a 65 gallon tank that I intend to use for a reef tank. I'm using a Eshopps 75 sump and a Eshopps S120 skimmer. I've heard about controllers but don't know anything about them. Are the necessary and if so, where can I go to get information on a decent one to use?

Welcome!! Glad to see you on here!

Edit: In regards to controllers, they are not necessary per say, but they are very helpful. You will find many reefers that have been very successful, and do not use controllers. These people just utilize outlet timers or power strips with built-in timers, job-specific monitors (PH, Temp, Etc... Look up Pin Point Monitor for an example), and power centers (such as DJ power strips). On the flip side, you will find many who will not run a tank without one (like myself). They provide you the ability to completely control the mechanicals of your system, as well as monitor parameters such as PH, Salinity/Conductivity, ORP, Etc...

I suggest you visit the following manufacturer websites to learn more about controllers before you jump in:

IMO, The Netune Apex is the best of the group, but it really comes down your own preferences when selecting one. The Neptune system is more of a plug and play system that has great support. The Reef Keeper system is very similar, but after having one for a while, I felt that their support and software updates were lacking. The Reef Angel system is a quality system as well, just not as popular as the other two. This is at least my 2 cents, I am sure many others can provide you with better/more information. Welcome to the forum and I hope that the skimmer serves you well!

Yeah, what that guy said!

I've got the Neptune Apex as well. This is on my first saltwater tank. LOVE IT.
Nothing like keeping an eye on things and having some control and notifications while you are out of town.

Just saying...
If you can afford it, it's worth it.

Welcome aboard. I do not use a controller as the previous guys have mentioned. When you first start out there is a lot to learn and understand. Sometimes to the point of being over whelming. I would like to have an APEX but it will be a while. As Im gaining knowledge in the hobby I'm also gaining experience with my tank. I like the hands on approach for now and when I'm ready for auto-pilot I will no doubt employ a controller. Hope that helps

With the cost of controllers down and the capabilities up, it's pretty much a necessity as it will make life a whole lot easier for you (and more enjoyable). Apex is the best, so I'd stick with that one. I think their entry level model is around $150 or so.

I remember when I got my first controller; I couldn't believe that I'd ran a tank without one. It's almost like keyless entry on cars. It's not really a necessity since you can simply use your key to unlock the door, but man is it a sweet option!

I would have to state that controllers are absolutely, positively, and without a doubt not a necessity. Tens of thousands of people have had tanks over many decades and have never used or needed a controller. An affordable and user friendly unit is a fairly new development for home use by an average hobbyist. As stated above, there is so much to learn when starting a reef tank and one can easily be overwhelmed. Most of us that have many years experience are learning new things all the time too. I have never owned or used a controller for any of my tanks and personally only know a couple people that do use one.

Notice how I did not say that I don't want one though. While not necessary they sure are nice and I know I will eventually get one. For anyone starting out I would suggest considering a few things before jumping on the controller. Namely, consider the budget. Now look at all your equipment that will actually be used to keep your livestock alive. Are you satisfied and happy with the quality and performance of your skimmer, powerheads, return pump, lights(especially), etc. If yes and you have the cash then go for it.

I absolutely agree.

When I got my second saltwater tank, it was part of the package deal.

My first, third and fourth saltwater tanks do not have a controller on them and they are doing just fine without one.

The controller simply appeals to the geek side of me as well as the control freak side.

Required?
Good grief, no.

Nice to have?
Peace of mind?
Yeah baby!!!
