I set up my new octopus DNW 200 recirc skimmer today. It took awhile to plumb it in but it wasnt to bad. The only thing i am not liking is the loudness of the pump? It seems somewhat loud and it does sit outside of the aquarium "my wife isnt to happy since it is in our living room." How long does it take to break this type of skimmer in , its the biggest one i have had yet. I have a MJ900 suppling water and it seems to be enough but I am not sure. Attatched are some pics - Oh also if someone sees something i could change please let me know.

Thanks,
CHris

My biggest issue with the octopus skimmers is the loudness of the pumps... but then again I'm a noise nazi... Tanks like children should be seen and not heard :). Anyways, mine did get a lil quieter after about a few weeks or so, but without the sound insulation in my cabinet it would still be audible.

How about plumbing it through the wall to the outside? You can build a short lil shed to house your skimmer, chiller, and refugium etc. You could even make it a greenhouse to grow some crazy mangroves and macros.

Your wife may prefer a small lil "extension" to the home than that monster sitting in your living room :). Of course this suggestion is just wishful thinking... Did you upgrade your fuge lights?

wow jin, that is a really good idea - like a little shed on the side of my house for sump stuff hmm????

Odd my NW150 was quite. Maybe the larger pump is noiser or could be like the Queit One pumps which seem to be hit or miss on the noise.

A little ghetto, but I found a Sylvania Full Spectrum (5000k) bulb at Lowes for $8 and another $7 for the clamp on reflector. $15 bucks for a sump light isn't bad. I was throwing over 500 par at the light, but suffered significant loss in a few inches at the waters surface still pretty good for an $8 bulb that will last a long time.

If your "shed" gets natural sunlight you could put in an amazing lil frag tank as well and grow corals to offset the costs. At least that's how I'd justify it to my wife :).

hmmmm.... a new lean-to on your house... some growlites... an increased power bill...

AND you'll have the extra security afforded by patrol cars passing through your neighborhood...
