All right, got a new protein skimmer today ( boyfriend does not know this yet, he's at work and I hope he likes it) it's a hang on the tank kind and I have followed all direction, not a lot came w the skimmer. I know it's gonna take some time to start really doing it's job but my question is is it always going to be putting all of these micro bubbles in the tank?

Given that you've set the skimmer up properly. The. The micro bubbles should go away after a few days once the skimmer has had time to broke itself in. What kind of skimmer is it?

El cheepo sea clone 100 by marine land. It was on clearance at warehouse aquarium and Kevin said it should serve our purpose.

Eckkk!! That's not one of the best. How far off the water do you have the return for the skimmer at? It will cause bubbles as well if the water falls from too high up. Also, what size tank are you running it on? Type of bio loads you plan to have in your tank?

IMO a skimmer is one of the most important equipment in a reef tank other then the lights.

I know it's not the best but it's gotta be better than nothing and alas, money does not grow on trees and gas is $5 a gallon...funny I complain about gas but I'll quickly pay $5/lbs in rock??? But I digress...
The tank is a 26g reef w only 5 small fish and a very nice CUC. Almost 80 lbs of live rock and 3-4inch sand bed. Lights r adequate but we r looking to up grade.

I agree it's better then nothing. From what I can see. You've done everything right so far. Give it a few days to break in and the bubble should go away. Same thing happen to me with my skimmer when I got it. It was cleaned out so well it though it was a new skimmer again and it made mad micro bubbles. After about a week the bubbles went away.

Hope this helps and good luck with the tank. Happy reefing!!

U should have waited and looked around a bit more. You essentially paid 100 for a maxi jet.

Expect to spend a lot of time tinkering with the air inlet to get the foam right. I finally gave up trying, even after replacing the plastic air valve with a precision industrial one. Originally it was virtually impossible to get any foam to speak of inside the body. The valve helped, but frankly it moved it from an F to a D minus.

One day I'm gonna recirc it just for the fun and make a Frankenskimmer. :D

It's not too late to return it either. If you really did spend $100 on it. You can return it and get yourself an aquaC HOB. A little more pricey but it works a lot better. They range around $120 - $200

Didn't spend close to $100, don't be dream crusher's people. Did we not get the "newbie" part or the implications of being on a budget. I'll try this, if it doesn't work then I'll move on. But thanks everyone for the input. :)

Fully understand being on a budget. I sincerely hope it does OK for you, but there is nothing worse for the budget than buying something that doesn't do the job. :)

You'd be better off without that skimmer on your tank. Being that the tank is small, you can easily do frequent, cheap water changes. It'll be a MUCH better way of nutrient export than the seaclone.

Well thanks for all the input. We will just give it a try, and if it doesn't work as well as we would like it to than we will buy a better one and put this one on another tank. At least that will give us reason to start a new one.. Lol

Keep an eye on it too for leaks if you are using it HOB. It will leak eventually and always at the worst times. Someone will offer a good skimmer for sale on the forum at a good price and I would get it. If you have a sump I would put it in there until you can upgrade.

hey Joeleigh a good skimmer that you can usually find frequently thats not too much of a shock to the wallet is a aqua c remora hang on back skimmer on a small gallon tank they work great and really pull a lot for there size factor.

In this hobbie I have seen people do things that make me scratch my head but it works for them when it never would for me. so give the skimmer a go if it does good great if not replace. Just remember in the end the tank will usually benefit more from a frequent water change than a skimmer will do.

for the record...

I LOVE that you bought something for your tank and didn't consult anyone (read:boyfriend) beforehand...

that shows boarderline addiction characteristics.. :D

like I said.. I LOVE IT...

Ok, so I took it back...Joe didn't like it so much and I have decided to bow to the peer pressure. Just to let u know this is taking a lot of my fun i.e. Instant gratification, from this hobby. :)

And I even stayed away from buying anything else...
