New Sump

I have used a skilter 250 for filtration and protein skimmer on a 30 gallon reef tank for some time. I have just added a 10 gallon sump with live rock, refugium, remora protein skimmer, and return. Can I ditch the skilter? What will do the job that the floss and carbon pads provided through the skilter?

I would. You could use carbon in a mesh bag in the sump (or better yet in a Phosban reactor). I don't use any mechanical filtration so the skimmer has a shot at getting it all out. JMO.

I have read mixed reviews on the filter sock. Some say it needs almost daily cleaning. Any thoughts? Thanks for the tips.

It would need at least weekly cleaning. All the stuff it traps is sitting there rotting until you remove and clean it.

Hah! You will probably need a few socks and cycle them in/out of rotation. Depending on how much you feed and how fine the sock is, you could have it overflowing every day. I had to change mine every day and would just run em through a bleach cycle then an extra rinse cycle.
