This stuff has always smelt strong to me.But for some reason now, it smells much worse after not using it for several months. Smells like acetome or nail polish remover.Does that mean it's bad or is it still okay?

You have a good nose, as nail polish remover typically contains ethyl acetate. That said…

When ethyl alcohol (as in vodka) and acetic acid (as in vinegar) are mixed, they can spontaneously react to form said ethyl acetate. Which is a type of organic compound called an ester. The reaction is also reversible, depending on conditions. FWIW- esters are commonly found in flavors and fragrances. So no surprise your nose is sensitive to it.

For carbon dosing the goal is to use a 6:1 ratio of alcohol to vinegar. There is something in chemistry called stoichiometry which accounts for actual molecular quantities of reactants & products, which I will not go into here. Instead below is a link from someone that did the analysis via an nmr spectrometer and then did the math for us to make a 1 liter batch of diy NO3 : PO4-X

“Based on an NMR of NOPOX, a diy mix of 500 mls vinegar (5%), 375 mls vodka (80 proof), and 125 mls RO/DI matches the ratios."
