I had never heard of this product until recently.

When I went down to Jacksonville a few weeks ago, and went to BioReef as I usually do while I'm there, I got to talking to the owner about a mandarin. I've always wanted one, but never felt I had the tank to meet the needs (until now of course).

He says, "Well, have you ever heard of Ova? All of our Mandarins love it. In fact, its supposedly the stuff that ORA had their mandy's weaned on, but forgot to tell everyone."

Hmmm... really? Well, he goes and breaks out some and proceeds to feed all the small fish. Sure enough, all the mandy's start lookin around and you can see em gulp down the small eggs. Thats it... "bag that one right there." Picked up a small package of the stuff and threw em both in a cooler for the ride back to the ATL.

Now... a few weeks later, I'm not sure I've ever seen an obese mandy before now. I have a 180 with only about 150lbs LR in the display, but I also have a melanaurus wrasse. So, while I'm sure there are some pods in there for the mandarin, I highly doubt theres enough to keep him THIS fat. If my camera was better I'd get a shot. He's regularly out in the front displaying to his reflection in the glass and showing off that fat belly of his.

All the fish love this stuff, so I thought I'd share. You can buy it online and I believe Raj said that SEA may look into it as well.

I was actually reading up on this stuff the other night when I was looking at different foods for my Anthias. I have it on my wishlist over at Mareindepot for the next time I place an order, but was also going to check to see if anyone local carried it.
Glad to hear it works so well with Mandarins as well

Cool... my mandarins are both fat as pigs, but I had to do it the hard way. :D

Sweet.. I love those little guys but never trusted my tanks to sustain there life. Its my girls favorite fish she will be excited. Has anyone seen any negative results with it?

I believe its a newer product, but I treat it like cyclopeeze. I try not to put too much in at the risk of polluting the tank. I turn down the powerheads and, using a turkey baster, feed the Ova near the mandy.

Its actually an older product that has been renamed. The old name was TMC Gamma Lobster Eggs.

hahaha... I like how they say its the same ole thing, just rebranded, then you read down further and all of a sudden its a "new and exciting food product for the fish and aquarium industry."

I mean... it is for me, because I can now keep a mandarin fat and happy, but still.

Haha, I just caught that after my last post. I just wish a LFS had this in stock, but I have checked all around and it looks like i will have to order it. Oh well, gives me an excuse to pickup a few other things I have been wanting.

Part that stinks is that because this is frozen food... no matter your order level, you'll have to pay $25 to have it shipped (at least with DrFS).

I need to check back with Jeremy at SEA about it.

Let me know what you hear from him

i'd like to get it local, too!

at least Jer has live blackworms...picked some up today....

Another vote for Jeremy at SEA to carry this! Don't have a mandarin now, but planning on it in the next few months.

Being able to reliably source a known food locally would be a strong incentive.

If anyone finds a LFS that is carrying this, please post it. Looking for some myself as I'm about to pick up a Mandarin. I would really like to be able to offer this as an option for it to eat.

I found hole untouched frozen sacks of eggs at my local market. Ask for fish roe or organs but not fish eggs. Ask for eggs and you will wind up with the red dyed stuff. The stuff I get is still in the sack with veins on it. Largely developed but still has the veins.
If you wanna get something to add to frozen or just spot feed then the cyclopeeze is the way to go
