I Wouldn't use the sand either. Possibility of introducing unwanted things with it .
What if you was to test water first. I know would cost more maybe.what about if you was starting a new tank
What size tank did you have in mind?
I was thinking a 40gallon or 20gallon. Would be fun to see what happens
For example, if you are the Monterey Bay aquarium and using millions of gallons, and located on the ocean, it makes lots of sense. If you’re talking about a 1000+ gallon tank, and you live in a beach house, maybe it also makes sense, depending on your ability to clean the water and deal with pests.
But even for GA Aquarium, which also uses millions of gallons, it is not economically feasible because Atlanta is so far from the ocean.

It sounds to me like you’re curious as a ‘just for fun’ experiment. I’d say go for it! Long-term may be costly (to drive back and forth for water), and a pain to manage pests. But it will certainly be interesting!
