Oh that smell!

Well, I just got a 55 and it has a sump. This is my first time with a sump. I'm setting up and the water just wont clear up. I wish for a filter, my other tank would of cleared up in an hour. The smell is getting to my husband and he is wandering around the house muttering about us "not needing this tank". We can't have this so any ideas out there? Where am I at? Water, adding salt. The rock is in there and some in the sump. I also have a bag of sand in the sump also.

Throw some filtersocks on it and just wait it out

my other questions is about the sump since I've never used one before. It's about 35 gallons, how many pounds of rock and is there anything special I should know about this new system?
