Old UV Sterilizer bulb causing algae growth?

If my bulb needs to be changed in my UV sterilizer, could that be causing problems, such as algae growth in my tank? My tank is a 44 gallon flat back hex, and I'm running an Aquanetics 25W sterilizer on it. I'm pretty sure the bulb is old (bought it used about 6 months ago), but I've been running it anyway. Should I stop running it until I get a new bulb for it?

On a side note......what wattage UV sterilizer should I run on a 135 gallon tank?

Don't know about wattage, but an old UV bulb should not ENCOURAGE algae growth. However, from what I have read, it does discourage algae growth by disrupting the free floating algae. So it takes longer for it to spread. Without the UV, it will spread faster.

When you change out the bulb inspect the quartz sleeve (assuming that it is removable). It may need to be cleaned to allow sufficient light to pass through.
