I’m sure you can. And I’m sure they will make their way down to your sump eventually. Maybe you can just use tooth brush and remove much of algae manually. I find my overflow box to be my pod hotel. I check my pod population based on how active they are in my overflow box. I see sponges and pods and tiny white snail things. I feed phytoplankton directly into overflow box some days. If you have algae growing there, just put a black acrylic piece on top of the overflow box so light doesn’t penetrate in there causing algae growth.
