Overflow Covers

I’m sure there are probably some old threads on this, but couldn’t find any to point me to a solution. I have a 125 with two slotted corner overflows. I have lost one fish and one peppermint in my sump filter block. I currently have a resident sexy living in the overflow. My question how do I safe it up and not impede water flow. Need a solution please?

I used some egg crate and depending on the size of the inhabitants I also added a plastic mesh cover then securiced it with zip ties. Not the nicest looking thing but it def worked.

I have used plastic covers like above, but had fish jump and get stuck above them and below the glass. I just use mesh and zip ties and make sure the mesh reaches up to the glass.
