Overflow kit question.

I bought an overflow kit to replace a hang on back overflow for my 30 gallon cube. The kit came with a pre drilled guide plate with two holes. How does everyone with an over like this plumb it? Are the two holes for bean or one for drain and the other return, which would then route back over the teeth?

I was planning on a single drain, with a strainer directly in the bulkhead and having a return bulkhead outside the overflow box.
