I have a 29g (not drilled) and a 15g that I will use for the sump for my next build. What would be the benefit of drilling the back of the tank (if any) and going with a glass-h**** kit vs. drilling the bottom of the tank (if it is not tempered) and doing a herbie style overflow?

Is one better than the other or is it personal preference?

Wouldn't the external durso be something similar to this set up? If so, this is the kit I am looking at because as you said, it doesn't take up much real estate.

If it is a standard 29G it probably has a tempered bottom so drilling it there is probably not an option. Drilling the back shouldn't be an issue at all. I have done some of my tanks with just a pvc 90 degree and a strainer inside the tank for the overflow. Are you drilling a second hole for the return or running it over the top?

I plan on putting the overflow box on it to help skim the top of the water. I'll also be drilling a second hole for a 1/2" return and add loc-line return.
