Par meter/coral color experiment

So I grabbed this link off another post, it's a little beyond me but it talks about fluorescent proteins and Par readings, and it got me wondering about par in my tank, it seems that certain fluorescent proteins do better under certain par levels. Does anyone have a par meter out there so I can conduct an experiment by placing certain corals in their "ideal par levels" all I really need is a basic idea of par in my tank in relation to depth and lateral distance from the center of my lights

I've found some interesting diy designs, but at some point in all of them I goes way over my head
