I have 3 tanks equalling 1000 gallons. I'm pushing water from a fish room 40' away. Will a saltwater pool pump work?

Not sure. From what I understand, the amount of salt in a pool is like 0.003 or so. No more than the salt that is in your eye.
I would call a manufacturer and find out what material is used to make the impeller/shaft.

Distance doesnt really matter, its the height you push the water.

Simply going up one or two pipe sizes will drastically cut down on friction losses.

Its the elevation changes that require a pressure based pump. You need to figure out how much flow you need to get at what height to pick the correct pump.
