I am thinking of joining but I have a question. From what I see it seems as though the meetings are on the weekdays. Do you ever have them on the weekend?

Meetings are on the second tuesday of the month. People didn't want to give up prime weekend time for meetings. It's also easier to get most speakers to give up a weekday and cheaper to fly them in and put them up in a hotel.

Meetings start at 7:30 (ish), so it's doable for most. But, you should join for the community and comradere :)

+1 The meetings are just a small part of what ARC is all about. You meet and have the opportunity to hang with great folks and share knowledge. There are also the power buys and the discounts at many LFS in the area..well worth the cost of membership!

Hmmmm well I will have to look into it. I'll have to try and arrange to get off work a little early on the day of the meetings.  By the way is there a list of vendors that offer the discounts.

Check out our sponsers...that's some of them but many more offer the discount as well...

By the way if anyone is interested here is a thread to my tank build to show off a little of what I have.

Scenario,

Here's the link to the sponsor forums. It also has a handy dandy little map.

Lots of stuff happens on days besides Wednesdays. Tour of Tanks happens on the weekends. Sponsor discounts MORE than pay for membership. The frags at the February meeting MORE than pay for membership. Freebies from other members, great deals, a TON of advice, and that super cute ARC member icon MORE than pay for membership. Wish this had been the first thirty dollars I had spent!

Not to mention you can enter photo of the month contest which boasts a 50 dollar prize!

I am a member of another great forum but like to find a local one with some good meetings. Was wondering if any one knows if you can go to the first meeting before joining just to check out the scenery.

All meetings are free to attend, whether you are a member or not. You can also bring family, friends etc. You definatly should come to the next one in April. They are usually announced a week or two befeor the 2nd tuesday of the month, so be on the look-out.

You will probably be impressed. usally Keen Reef is there with lots of stuff to look at, sometimes other vendors are there as well. Many members come to trade, and Barbara is always there with free hugs. Almost every meeting also involves a raffle, whether it be corals, products, or who knows what else. Not to mention that the speakers are always very knowledgeable, and informed people in the marine world, many of them with published work that you may have sitting on your shelf at home (if you enjoy marine-related books).

Also mosty of the BIG meetings/unofficial get-togethers happen on weekend/evenings, like the awesome Christmas party, BBQ cookout, Dog Days, maybe others....

I believe it is also permissible to arrange your own unofficial get together if you wish (the Dog Days are usually arranged by misc members). So if you are up to the task or putting together your own for the weekend or late-night folks, you might run it by the BoD.

I used to make it to all the meetings. I work Graveyard and used to work Wed-Sat night so it worked well for me. Now I work Sun-Wed and it is difficult. Since the meetings always run a little long I would always have to leave early to get to work. It also is like me waking up and going to a meeting at 5:30 in the morning so always difficult as well. Graveyards are starting to kill me. I do miss the meetings. Unfortunately I am an IT guy, and the second tuesday of every month is also when Microsoft decides to release patches so I usually have about 5,000 servers that go down every tuesday night due to Microsoft's brilliance.

Matt
