I just ordered two more large power heads for 130 display. They are 650 gallons per hour each. Plus I have one in there already that is 800 gallons per hour and another one that is 300 gallons per hour. I didn't feel like the two I had were moving enough water so I ordered a two pack that is rated 1300 gph. If I have all four in there is that too much or should I just use the 800 and one 650? I can place the extras in my sa freshwater tank if I don't use them? Any suggestions?

I would say that's still not enough in my opinion but it depends on your amount of live rock and aqua scape. In my 90 I have 2 850 gph on one side and on the other side I have a 1350 gph and an mp10.

The less dead spots the better, of course you dont want to be blasting a crazy amount of water but good flow is key! If you have any sps you will def need more flow. Hope that helps!

That does help. I have about 130 pounds of Lr in there now. However I intend to double that tomorrow. It's built up along the back of the aquarium with the most of it being in the center. I have the smaller power head behind the Lr give a current in the back to eliminate dead spots where there are gaps. Then u also have a 15000 gph external filter. I am using it more as a power head instead of a filter tho. No media in the filter compartment. It's actual an above ground pool filter so it's got a small compartment off the pump that I can put a bio wheel in to kind of collect some solids. I had to dial it down considerably because I basically turned the tank into a swirling vortex. Lol so I have quite a bit of flow. I think honestly I wouldn't even need the power heads but I would like to eventually eliminate the pump as it's not the most quite feature to the tank. It's plumbed halfway across the house. Lol it does come in handy when I'm adding water tho. I just stick on tube into my premixed solution and let it flow. Lol

There is an old thread on here that polled the users about how much flow was in each tank. Most of the notable refers had 20 times + the volume of the tank. For you that would be 2700+ gph.

No one can answer correctly with out seeing your display and know your future inhabitants.

First and foremost what do you intend on keeping? Fish only, lps only, mix or sps dominant all reguire dramatically different degrees of flow. Rockwork can and will play a roll but not nearly as much when determining needs as will creatures you keep.

Honestly I have no idea what I want as far as animals. I'm trying to get my tank set up and running and established before I dive into animals. So I have really looked to far into that. I do know that a I want a few anemones and a clownfish or two. Maybe and upside down jellyfish. Some green chromis and a few cardinals. But that's as far as my list has gotten. I'm not sold on those either... like I said I haven't gotten that far. If I start deciding now I will impulsively they to get them sooner and I want to wait. So it's a work in progress. Lol on another note. .. my 18 inch actinic bulbs came in today!!! Apparently they were out of 18 inch bulbs so they upgraded me to 24 inch bulbs for free... yay

Then you have more flow than needed for now.

Slower down and research all purchases before committing. Impulse buying in this hobby can kill your wallet and your animal.

That's why I don't know the livestock I want. Because I havent gotten that far. That was what I was saying I'm taking it slow to avoid impulse buying. However I do know that I need more flow than the 800 and 300 gph power heads I'm currently running. So I bought the other 2. They haven't arrived yet. So I will wait to put them in.

Yeah the 20x tank volume is a popular number. Just remember that as you add coral and it grows, your flow needs will probably change. As the coral grows larger it may block flow to certain areas and you will find yourself repositioning and/or adding powerheads to compensate. On a side note, I would forget about any jellyfish in your current tank lol. You already probably have more flow than they can handle.

Problem is that's wrong. You can not know the flow you need until you know the creatures you intend to keep.

FYI Jellyfish needs almost no flow....

I had 2 1400 on my 90 it was to much. 3 750 was to little. My 29 has 1 550 to much but good enough for my fish

You should look into the wp's, they're nice and cheap and adjustable.
