If you had $300 what protein skimmer would you buy for a 90 gallon tank? Also what is the difference between a Bubble Magus NAC7 and a Bubble Magus Curve 7?

Agreed

Reef Octopus NWB 150 6"
or is you can spare the extra $25 get the Reef Octopus Diablo XS 160 !

I'm using one right now and love it!! The only thing is I wish it had a bigger collection cup. It's a direct knock-off of the Bubble Magus skimmers and it appears to be just as efficient at far less cost.

I started looking at the new pipeless skimmers that are coming out and the variable speed drive skimmers. Wow those are nice, pricy but nice. Check out this one from http://www.aquacave.com/Reef-Octopus-Pro-Open-Volute-POV-10-Space-Saver-Skimmer-w-DC5500s-Pump-up-to-400gal-P3878.aspx">reef octopus.</a>

I have a hydor performer 505 on my 92g corner. It is a recirculating model and can be found for less than 300 including the feed pump. Works great and I believe I have the same sump as you.

LOL @ http://atbskimmers.com/deluxe-18/">ATB skimmers</a>

Anyone who pays $3K for a skimmer needs to have their head examined. Especially after that article that tested 7 different types of skimmers and showed the cheapest of the bunch Precision Marine was the most efficient one. Oh well i guess if you got the money, why not.

there is a price "break off" IN MY OPINION for skimmers...
I'm not sure paying 3k for one (unless its a 300g+ tank is cost effective), BUT I've had cheap skimmers and I've had expensive skimmers.

every skimmer and pump is NOT... by any means.. created equal.

Yes you did and I thank you for responding. Like I eluded to in my original post, I'm mainly looking in the $300 range. The cheapest ADP I could find was around $800 so that is slightly out of my price range. Was only laughing cause I didn't know they made $3000 skimmers.

I'm really considering trying out the new pipe less cadlights skimmer that is around $190. Anyone have any experience with it? I like the small footprint and simplicity of it.

I'm about to bite the bullet and replace my skimmer with a Reef octopus. I've put it many skimmers over the years and so far I am quite impressed with the price point and quality of the Reef Octopus line. The new DC powered line looks to be where I am headed but it is definitely above the $300 price point on that line but several others would be just fine for you under the $300 mark.

Its either the new CAD skimmer or saving up for one of the new variable speed pump skimmers, of course that will require a bit more than $300. Probably worth it though.

If money is tight consider a used skimmer. I would look for a Reef Octopus NW-200 with an OTP-3000 pump (with the new model needle wheel, which you can buy for ~$35). They are rated for 200+ gallons and are pretty worry free.

With the extra $$ left over buy something else or use to upgrade something.

Funny u mention that pump, I have one with the old needle wheel on my current skimmer. It almost overpowers my skimmer. I had to install a valve on the airline that is attached to the suction of the pump to turn down the air.

I keep reading that the variable speed pumps are great on skimmers but I have yet to read any user reviews on them. I'm a big fan of external recirculating skimmers and the variable speed with the slow start up sounds right up my alley.
You should be able to pick up a decent Reef Octo at one of the local shops for less than $300.
