Hey guys im getting really close to finally have everything up and running. I purchased a used RO 10in space saver for my tank at really good deal. Im just concerned its going to be to large for my tank. BRS has it rated for 400 gallons with a well stocked tank.

I have a 180 DT with a 50g refug and 40g sump. I plan off on starting with just a FOWLR and at some point having it very well stocked. I originally thought with my apex i could run it 80% of the time as to not overdo it but the more i have looked into it they have to break in and i'm not sure if that would be a great idea.

With the black friday sales coming up im just wondering if i should get something more appropriately sized for my tank.

Any ideas?

Most skimmers are over rated. With a total system capacity of 270g, the skimmer rated at 400 gallons is fine.

Alright Great. I just didnt want to pass up any BF deals if i needed to make a change.

What happens when a skimmer "over skims". I've always heard this but no one explained it. How is it determined. I mean it is a protein skimmer so I guess the amount of protein removed is measured some how?

My experience, YMMV.

When I over skimmed (MRC2-R rated at 450 on 210 g system) the skimmate production would decrease.

Choosing skimmer depends on the tank bioload to me. If u have the space, go with the biggest one u can find. Better option for u in the future to add more fish / bioload without worrying. Keep in mind that skimmer only remove certain things in the water for your tank. There are other things it can't remove (nitrate/ phosphate...). Use it in conjunction with other form of filtration.
