recently got a protein skimmer sea clone 100,after getting it and reading all you guys responses we decided to take it back...ha..now we are planning to get a different one,and wanted to hear what y'all have to say, like which one would be the best without completely breaking the bank?would love to hear any suggestions.thanks.

yeah probably,i mean i guess we could do one with a sump also... me and my girlfriend are fairly new to this hobby, and really new to the idea of a protein skimmer...

porter at warehouse aquarium was showing me one a couple days ago but i cant remember what kind it was,all i remember is that it was $208.00 ill find out tomorrow when i go up there like i do every day off..the sea clone we took back was like85 bucks.also i didnt like how much room it took up in the tank.are all the skimmers gonna be that bulky?

well idk... mabey we will just wait on it and think about adding one. my girl really wants to get one so she bought that sea clone that we ended up taking back, the tank has been up and running for a year without one,is it just one of those things where the more time that passes the more the tank will need one?

Edit: oh yeah and i totally know about the whole hanging on back of tank and not the inside blakejohn.....hahaha...i was just saying minus the part on the outside there was also alot of stuff to fit on the inside with this particular skimmer....was just kinnda wondering if some of the nicer ones were a bit more compact...you know kinnda like when u buy a phone the more u spend the smaller it is..lol

Ok I just saw where superclown suggested the aqua c remora, I'll check this one out..thanks.

Just like anything its a matter of opinion and there is not "one" special skimmer that is just the best in the world. Its all about your budget, performance needs, and what kind will work for your tank.

I say the aqua c remora simply because from everything ive read for its size it skims better than any other skimmer in the same size.

With that being said aqua c is not the only company out there that makes a good skimmer

To answer your question about needing it more as time goes on, I think that you are right. With rigid enough water change schedule, you can maintain it pretty will "skimmerless", but in general nutrient/waste buildup is slow over time. Before the days of protein skimming/live rock systems, "Old Tank Syndrome" was fairly common... tanks would motor along fine for a year or two and then crash.

There are some people who pride themselves in not using a skimmer, but personally I would not consider even for a moment going without one... and I will never again try to get by with a mediocre one either.

As for models, among HOB skimmers the AquaC Remora, as SuperClown suggested, is pretty highly regarded. I'd also look into the Reef Octopus HOB model. I don't know anyone who uses that particular one, but Reef Octopus skimmers as a whole are known as one of the best skimmers that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

If you end up with an in-sump skimmer, any of several Octopus models would be nice. After recently switching to an SWC skimmer on one of my tanks, I am comfortable recommending them also. The Xtreme 120 Cone skimmer would work very well for you if you have the room, and it is less than $200. I bought a 160 cone for my 90g tank, and it is doing a great job (plus it is almost silent).

HTH!

If you can syphon and do frequent water changes, no hob skimmer. HOB skimmers are notoriously garbage, so avoid them if you can.

If you can have a sump, then definitely go with a skimmer. You then have quite a few options. Going with a higher quality skimmer to start with will save you $$ in the long run.

I've got a remora.. it's decent.. but Deltec makes one (and I think that Reef Octopus makes one also) that is pretty good.. (but expensive)
