Protein Skimmers

Are protein skimmers required when initially setting up a tank or are they needed at the introduction of your coral/fish? How important is it if you start the tank cycling process without a skimmer?

I wait till the nitrate stage to turn on my skimmer, as you wanna let ya ammonia build up into nitrites...

I ran my first 2 tanks without them. They just make it easier on us.

For sure +1 really no need right off the start in my thought process once bio load etc I will put one for sure.
