I'm thinking about doing a closed loop for my 55. Any suggestions on what kind of pump? I'd like two returns back into the tank.

I'll eventually have SPS in there so needs some flow.

Loren..use a mag 5 or 7 and follow Melv's design. I am doing the same except using two of my returns on the frag tank.

I am going to use my Oceans Motions instead of the SCWD. Will look something like this:

it's not a problem that his is 29g and mine is 55g?

You might want to use a Mag 7 or 9.5 instead to give more flow but at least you won't have to drill.

I'm thinking I want to drill it as well. A bit scarey, but I can always buy your 55g if it breaks :)

But I don't want the pipes on the inside...i'd prefer the outside.

water, rock and fishies can go in a big tub while the procedure is done, right?

You can but you'll have to completely empty the 55G out to do it. Glass dust would not be good for the inhabitants, plus where you currently have it there is no way you could drill it. You might want to consider something like Melv did for now.

Ya melves design would work for only two outputs... I have 6 on my 55 gal so it took a Mag 18...

What kind of budget do you have for this pump? Out of all the pumps I've had eat impellers, Mags are second only to Maxijets. Mag Drives were orignially pond pumps, where noise isn't a concern, so they're also noisier.

My favorite closed loopers are Sequence Reeflo pumps. The Dart is very economical for moving tons of water. It pulls 160watts/1.4amps to move 3600GPH.

The Mag Drive 36 pulls 360 watts and is louder than you'll ever want to hear a pump. I know because I used one for a few years to mix 265gallon batches of saltwater.

I looked at the dart...I would like one of those. It's going to be a few months though.

Although there was one on the trade threads a few weeks ago...
