at 4' of head with 1" pipe that has one exit and one fully open gate valve the GPH of a mag 2 would be 118.

Is 118 gph enough for a 30g 12x24x24 with a small sump? I think somebody (probably Jeff) told me 4x tank gallons but I can't remember if that is correct. It would be nice if it would work because I could have one and a spare by tomorrow for relatively cheap. Not that I'm trying to cheap out on a pump necessarily, but if it works, why spend more?

Things like noise etc are not a huge concern to me at this point. I can always swap out pumps later

Edit: Interestingly (according to this http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/head-loss-calculator">handy calculator</a>) If I went over 1' and used two 90º elbows it would still be 118gph.

This make sense?
