So I'm going to build a manifold very soon for my tank and I'm going to need to upgrade pumps. I have a 72 gallon bow and currently use a mag 7. All it runs is my return. My manifold will be running, my return, emporor 40 watt UV maybe mounted vertical, 3 reactors, and a small fuge that I have. I would also like to use this same pump when I upgrade to a 120 with dual returns. My mag pump is setup submersed. I dont mind the heat that the mag puts out because it helps keep my temps where I want them without having to run a heater.

Should I just get a larger mag or go with something diff? I'm pretty sure I would like to stick with the submerged setup but I guess I could switch to an external if it came down to it. I want to go somewhat bigger than I need so keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestions.

PS I like the mags because IME they are very reliable and simple. Very few parts to fail and I like that. Give me some reasons why I should change if you got em. Also give me a round about price new of the pump you recommend.

Wow, where would you even have room for an external under a 72? If you want the heat stability and external look at the Poseidon ps4. They are pretty small and only 30 db too.

I ran my 72 with a mag 9 that fed the return, uv, skimmer, and one reactor. Worked great but as some have noted, there are way more effecient pumps to choose from. So my suggestions is look for something with just a tad more flow like 800 to 900 gph...

I just changed my mag 7 for eheim 680 (640?)....well, it's on the way, anyway...

anybody else

Edit: I would rather stay with a submerged pump

Edit: also the uv is almost 4 feet tall with 3 inch housing

I am not a fan of mag pumps personally. They are just very inefficient. You may look at triton pumps. Supposed to be a little better. Fwiw i am running a mag 9.5 and a 5 on my 120. Going external as soon as i get one. There are a handful of blueline 55s fs right now, and i think that'd be a good choice.

anybody else on this, I really thought I would get a little more feedback. The feedback I got I do appreciate. Someone suggested a quite one pump. Are these any good? I don't know much about diff pumps other than mags.

So many recommend quiet ones, but when u check reviews, they don't always start up in a power failure...
