im going to set up a 25g quarantine tank and im planning on using a HoB filter but im wondering how this work. i'm new at the reef tank. I was wondering what I put in the filter? I know I cant use the carbon pads so what do I use?

when you run a qt tank you can run it like a normal tank which includes running carbon but you dont want to have sand or rock in it. if one of your fish gets sick and you have to medicate you take out your carbon so it does not absorb the medicine. also its a good idea to run matrix in the tank as biological filtration and remove it anytime you remove your carbon.

I've attached a link here from Google [Images] here: http://www.google.com/search?q=seachem+matrix&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=RCQFUs_ePMm2yAG9poH4BA&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1138&bih=664">http://www.google.com/search?q=seachem+matrix&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=RCQFUs_ePMm2yAG9poH4BA&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1138&bih=664</a>.

Matrix is the grayish whitish rocks in the photos in the link above. There are two sizes, the smaller size and a medium size [pond size]. You would want to probably use the smaller size if it's a smaller hospital tank,

You could purchase a filter sock and place the matrix inside the sock and drop in down into the HOB filter. If you need to take out your carbon, you just pull out the matrix sock as well. You could also use another sock for so extra carbon if you have room in the HOB filter. The filter pad replacements have a very limited amount of carbon in them when you buy the filter pads.

I hope this information is helpful.

Edit: I forgot to add that Matrix is a Seachem product.

to expand on what wannabee said matrix is a type of rock that is super porous and those pours provide beneficial bacteria a place to stay and that is its sole function but those bacteria process out things like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate all of which are bad for your fish tank.

could I use just the matrix as well and saltwater tanks have to establish themselves with the correct bacteria and parameters for nitrite nitrate and ammonia so would I need to do this to my quarantine as well or can I just place the fish in saltwater and he/she will be ok?

I haven't started to use Matrix yet. My previous posts are related to my research here at ARC. I've already purchased some Matrix and will be placing it in my HOB filters on my smaller setups. I have used the search option here at ARC and this is what I quickly came up with.

I keep two bags of matrix in my sump at all times. When I want to QT I put water in the tank, start some flow and move the bags of matrix into the QT. it is now ready for fish. Keep an eye on water parameters and do water changes as needed. If you medicate toss the matrix when done. If you don't have to medicate just move it back to your sump.

Jenn:

Your informative article was in the back of my mind when I listed the other links above. With trying to get the information to him [at the speed of technology] I had forgotten your article. I'm glad I was able to slow down enough to see that you posted your article here.

Thanks for keeping me straight, Jenn. I guess I need to eat more fi** to allow my short term memory a chance to catch up and process all my [brainstorming] information I collect at one time when I read a post here at ARC. Anyways, I'm thankful for you to post your article here. Very informative article [+ 1].

I eat fish :) Doesn't help my brain much though... I have CRS disease.

Who said "fish"? fi** = "figs" not fish. [LOL] Just kidding; you got it right: fish.

No hurt on this side. We are always having fun here at ARC. No safety requirements in this post; so "horseplaying is allowed".

I don't believe I have CRS, if I did have it I would never know it. All the fish in the oceans couldn't help me. I've come to the reality that I'm just getting "old"; so I just live with that concept. [LOL]
