Question about adding a filter tank without drilling?

I have a 20G long that I set up as a frag tank out of necessity when all my zoas started dying. I don't have any rock in it and don't really want to put any in so I want to set a tank, maybe 10G, next to it and fill it with live rock to use to filter the 20G. First question is does that make sense and if so how do I get the water from one to the other and back again without drilling any holes and without having to worry about a malfunction overflowing either one? I've tried to do a little research and have found there is an overflow box that may be used in this situation but I'm not clear on how to implement that or if that is the only solution. Thanks again for any help or advice.

About.com has refugium plans that are simarlar to what you're asking....... Basically 2 U-tubes (one with a pump) connecting two tanks.

Go to about.com, use key words reef, refugium plans, stand beside refugium.

It's cool. I'm planning something simarlar.

Ok, thanks I looked at everything I could find from that site and I think I have the concept, just not the implementation. I'm trying to get past the part about not loosing siphon if I have a power outage. I'm thinking I need to put an overflow box in the 20G with a pvc standpipe that goes to the 10G and add an overflow compartment to the 10G to put the pump in.

If I understand correctly if I have a power outage the overflow from the 20G would stop once the level goes below the overflow box and both tanks would be at an equilibrium. Once power is restored if the siphon doesn't start up again then the pump would empty its overflow chamber and then just burn out?

I know I'm missing something here.

Mark that level on the 10 gallon as your min operating level then fill the 10 gallon up a little more with your water and put a pump with a return line. You will need to attach the return line in some way by maybe bending some more pvc or soemthing. I hope this makes sense and it is the easiest way to do it.

Ha! There isn't anything I've found to be easy in this hobby so I'm sure this won't be an exception. We'll talk about this next week when I come over.

How high is your 20 Long? 10"? Its been a while (years) since I've seen one. I might have something you'd be interested in, its a fuge that I built, drilled moded from a 10 gallon, and has bulkheads installed already that I may or may not be able to use, I'll try to post pictures of it later........

OK, thanks! The 20 Long is 12.5" tall just slightly above the 10G.

No buddy, when I say I moded it, I mean I REALLY moded it beyond recongnition. The 10 Gallon is 20 inches high, and has a foot print of less than 12" square. I tested it, it hold water, and looks cool. I'm looking for my cam now.

Sorry, I was referring to the height of my 10G.

What did you decide to do with yours? What is the advantage of having the 10G basically standing on end? Was that just to save footprint space? I'm going to try to move my frag tank to another location in the room and want to try to get a filter tank ready for it.

It was orginally designed that way to match the 12" width of my display tank, while still providing me with room for a 6" DSB, and plenty of water for macros and critters. It looks pretty cool. Its going to be too small to really service the new 50g tank, but would have been great on my 30g.

Add a good light and http://atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5981">this</a> would make a good frag tank. LR could be put underneath and the 20 gal could be BB.

Haven't posted this as available under *Livegoods*, but will probably do that today. Someone mentioned an interest but never responded to a PM so it's available for $100 (what I paid). The set-up is the same as when I bought it last month.
