Questions on becoming a member

Is the membership period one year for the date you join or do you have to renew as of Jan 1st every year. Also my partner ( same sex) we live in the same house wants to join as well. Can we do a family membership. If so does he created an account pay the $ 10.00 and then e-mail someone to let him/she know that we are a family. Thanks for your help. Stewart
