I want to add some color and plants to my tank. I know puffers and some of the other fish i have arent reef safe. I can have a feather duster, are there any other items i can add to my tank?

Tell us more about your system. What's the current livestock list? Are you wanting to keep any corals, or just keep a fish only tank? What's the tank size? What type of lighting do you have?

As far as plants go, there are a number of types of macro algaes that can add some color to your display, but I'll have to look up the types. I'll try to get you some links shortly.

my tank is a 11o gal with live rock only. The fish i intend to keep are puffers, fox face, triger and a clown. the lighting is 4x65 bulbs...
I know a feather duster is ok, looking for other ideas.

the pros can tell you if i'm wrong, but tube anemones are pretty colorful and look awesome under actinics. I'm not sure about their compatibility though.

My money says a trigger will eat a feather duster. If the trigger doesn't, the puffer likely will.

With that fish combination, a lot of inverts won't do, they'll end up as menu items.

As for "plants" - macroalgae (not technically a plant, but similar), there are a few sorts that aren't very palatable, but many would be picked at by the Foxface, and even the trigger.

Corals - some of the soft corals might be OK since they aren't very tasty, but the puffer and perhaps the trigger are likely to sharpen their teeth on hard corals.

Not a good idea, IMO to try going reef with those particular fish specimens.

Jenn, you posted...Not a good idea, IMO to try going reef with those particular fish specimens. What exacualty is that? "Going reef" I would love more info on that... Also "Snowmansnow" i dont have the trigger yet, but we kinda like the niger triger. We dont any of the fish mention in other posts yet, they were just fish that we had in the past and loved.. the only fish we current have are the yellow eyed tang aka kole tang, yellow clown, sailfin tang, a dog puffer, and there was an Engineer Gobies that i havent seen since i put him in the tank.

If you want to add "plants" (macroalgae, and/or corals) and fanworms, that's effectively changing over to a reef tank, from a FOWLR (fish-only with live rock).

Jenn

well i understand that i have a FOWLR tank but i was just wondering if there were any plants, corals i could add that would be safe with my type of fish and lighting Like i said i have 4x65 watts in a 110 gal tank... i think that is 3.something watts per gallon which isnt much. I am not sure what macro algae is but i am about to google it...

Watts per gallon is a poor way to calculate light - just sayin'.

A 110 if it's 48x18 is a deep tank. Light won't penetrate as well as it would for a shallower tank.

Having said that there are some things that could be kept under that light, but with the fishes you have, you've got the challenge of finding stuff that isn't going to end up as fish food.

i can't agree more, which is why i was asking you guys for your advice and knowledge on this matter... I know with my fish they didn bother a feather duster last time, maybe i got lucky who knows but i was trying to see if there were any other items people know of that would work.

Well there are always exceptions to any "rule". We are dealing with live creatures with their own will.

Would I recommend it? Nope. Have people done it? Yep. What were their results? I'm sure they vary. Some fish "don't read the books" and don't behave as the majority of their brethren do. But given the law of averages, I wouldn't take that chance.

If you opt to buy creatures that will be at risk, that's up to you - as long as you're prepared for the possibility that your new acquisitions may become menu items for the others. Not the way I'd do it, but that's how some choose to.

Jenn

soft corals like leathers, star polyps and mushrooms. Might be able to get away with things like frogspawns, hammers and zoas but I would try small frags first to see what happens.

Tube anemonies would be good as well.
