i have a 2222-37 eheim canister that i have drug out of retirement and trying to bring the seals back to life (the large one being $20 plus ship) but i want to put charcoal in it and the holes in the tray are to large for the charcoal that i have. can i cut a piece of new fiberglass screen to line the bottom of the tray to keep it from falling thru or do i need bigger charcoal pieces?

I don't see why screening it would hurt.. Seems like it would work to me.. I don't know a lot about canisters though.. Maybe someone will chime in with a definate answer..

I don't have a lot of canister experience either but, couldn't you put the carbon in a large media bag? You may have some bypass around the bag but it should be minimal.

Wish I could remember the name, but Seachem markets a carbon alternative that is quite large in particle size. It looks like granite gravel everyone used on their drivways back in the day (perhaps a bit smaller) you can pick it up at any petsmart, and it's supposed to be much better than carbon (carbon, the "new" name for charcoal).

Matrix....... That's it, you can buy it most anywhere, and its supposed to be better, along with being huge....
