Ok I have a mag7 for a return pump on my 40gB.

I want something quieter.

I installed a BA overflow that is silent and I don't want a pump hum and rattle messin it up.

What am I looking for?

;)

Pfftt...a BA pump, of course.

I've got two Mag pumps and neither of mine are loud, and I've got a Quiet One, and it's not loud either. A lot of folks seem to like the Eheim pumps, and talk about how quiet they are. My buddy has a Sicce, and it's real quiet.

I suppose it's all relative though, depending upon your tolerance.

I've had an Eheim for over 27 years and it still works great. Silent too.

I have a tiny Eheim that I use for water changes. If the larger ones are like that one I would say you couldn't go wrong. That little thing is amazing. But, my return pump is a Quiet One and it is dead silent. I have no complaints. Combined with the BA overflow the only noise I hear from my tank is the fans on the LEDs when the lights are on.

I'm REALLY impressed w the bean.

The only issue I'm having right now is that the main syphon doesn't want to start on a startup... Say after a power out

;)

explain and show pictures of how you ran the pipes

also i placed a silicone mat under my mag 7 when it was in my 75 to keep it off of the glass. when i got my 9.5 for my 120 i wet with the block and its ok but i can still hear it some

Ya... I have a 9 and a 7 and I'm not happy w the noise from either....

Eheim 1260. I have been tempted to go with a 1262 myself. The only problems I have with mag pumps are not heat, but the fact the impeller sticks when I cut the power to target feed.

i think i read somewhere that they are the same just diff. impeller and maybe the face. it was like 30.00 to upgrade

Snow, on my BA it never starts totally quiet. I let it run for a couple of minutes then I pull the 90s off the bulkheads for a couple seconds to let the air out and immediately put them back on. After that, it settles down and then never makes a noise. Also, you may need to close the valve partially on the main syphon drain. If it is open to much it will draw too much water. You want it to run at a full syphon while the one with the breather line runs as a normal drain. The key is to get just enough water running down the one with the breather to coat the walls of the pipe but allow air to travel down the center.

Not sure if you have seen this or read the whole thing but to me it was indespensible and did a great job of explaining how it all works.

Well I upgraded my 55 sump to a 75 yesterday or shall I say THIS MORNING. It took me 15hrs total, well not completely I still have about 1 to 2 hrs left on some side stuff. So about 2am when I turned it on I had a super loud noise I never could get the level to raise in the overflow box oh my goodness, never had I had so much problems. I turned the BV open and close hundreds of times LQQKing for my mark and swore it rubbed off and almost threw up my hands then I closed the full siphon and it went quiet and I saw my mark on the handle…, whew. I was closing the open channel instead of the full siphion.

Once you dial it in you should never have to do anything. The only time it messes up at startup is when the filter soc is too clogged and the water level inside of it is higher than 1”. This is why I asked for you to post detailed pics. It normally takes about 30 to 45 seconds for it to level out. It will have a gurgle as the emergency drain removes some water and the open channel has water in the air tube but after that all I can hear is the PS and fans.

Might be cheaper to put up some foam insulation around the inside of your sump area. I bet you can get it quieter than by spending a chunck of change on a slightly quieter pump. Haven't done this myself, but I know closing the front door of the stand makes a difference (-=

The quietest pump I've ever had was a Marineland Maxijet. If the large one will handle your tank, I'd get it in a second. On my new 150, I needed a bigger pump and ended up with an Iwaki which has a pretty decent hum. And the MM fans are noisy too.

For a SILENT tank I'd replace the fans on my LEDs and replace my return pump. But it's not bad as is so I let it go.
