So my brother bought a McCoskers Flasher wrasse about 7-8 months ago for his 100 gal tank. Within a day it was no where to be seen. We assume he went to reef heaven. A few weeks ago he thought he'd try anouther one. It seems to be doing well.

Well a few days ago, I noticed he had two of them swimming around. Upon closer inspection one of them still had sand and debris stuck to a thick slime coat. I presume from burrowing in the sand bed. With in an hour this debris was gone and the fish looked very healthy and happy. He/she has been visible ever since. Now between the purchase of the first and second fish the tank had been stripped of the live rock (to scrub some hair algea, which has since cleared up) two seperate times. The fish was never seen for the entire time he was missing.

So my question is, has anybody ever experianced this before? Do they hibernate like bears?lol This fish was "MIA" for minimum 7 months. I've seen newly introduced wrasse hide for a few days before but never like this. Any ideas?

What else was in the tank with it??

Could have been scared coming out at night for food. Then Burrowing to 'safety'. Now there are two he feels more safe maybe.

Not read anything about them hibernating before

some gobies, anthias, lantern basslet, firefish, and a electric blue damsel(but never really bothers anybody), dottyback Nothing too big or aggresive. I guess its possible that he came out at night to feed. I didn't think they really did hibernate...I guess there really is no other explanation, cause he had a fat belly, and didn't look like a fish that had been in "hiding" for such a long time. In any event, it's good to see him out and healthy.

I had a YWG that went missing in March, reappeared in July, and was never in the overflow or sump.

I read your thread earlier and thought WOW. I put a McKoskers wrasse in my tank about a month ago and have not seen him since. Tonite while I was cleaning the glass I saw his little web under a rock and her cute little eyes were staring right at me.
