Frankly....I can't tell a difference between a recirc skimmer and one that isn't. In my experience, they both removed the same skimmate. This issue that I have with a recirc skimmer is it requires two plugs.....one to pump water in to the skimmer body and one for the recirc pump. Two plugs equals more energy use.
Recirculating skimmers are more efficient and more flexible. The efficiency comes from the fact that the pump(s) used to pull air into the skimmer can be tuned easier and more effectively. They are only having to pull air not having to add water to the skimmer. The flexibility comes in because they can be run either in sump or anywhere you can find room to plumb them.
Mike's right. A recirc skimmer is better. It's a more efficient skimmer (bearing that it's a good skimmer to begin with) and can be used remotely very easily.
