I have a 55g reef tank and I want to buy a submersible pump. I have 2 powerheads now doing the job (and two in the tank for circulation, which will remain circulation pumps). I have about 5 feet of head and looking for 400GPH at 5 feet. I owned a LifeGuard Quiet One for years....ran wet, dry and cool. Today, I noticed hobbyist gravitating toward the Mag pumps by Supreme. Supreme has been around for decades, but they were never know for their quality and ran hot. Any ideas whould be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, it has to be submersible. If there's a brand that you like, please let me know. I will do the "head" calculations.

I prefer the QuietOnes over Mags any day, they're well built and not as prone to leaks as the Mags

I have a Quiet One 2200, POS. Half the time it wouldn't start and would need to be nudged to get water flowing. Now it makes weird ticking noises and is only used as a mixing pump.

At least when I plug my mag in, I know water is going to pump out.

Eheim. Best submersible on the market, IMO. I use 4 of them in various reactors, and have a 1260 as my saltwater mix pump.

Mag Drives are still the most popular IME. Eheims are great - a bit spendier.

I've found that Quiet One doesn't necessarily live up to its name, and can throw just as much heat. Whatever wattage the pump is (regardless of brand) it's like having that many watts of heater in the tank. Lower wattage = less heat.
