I have a rougly 25 gallon tank plus im guessing around an extra 15ish gallons in the sump.
Do you think a red sea prizm skimmer would do a good job?

Personally, I'd get an AquaC Remora. Better skimming power & adjustable skimmer cup. I've had two back in the day...one on my 25g nem tank and one on my 15g mixed reef.

If you have room in the sump, an AquaC Urchin wold be great, there was one on sale here not too long ago for a great price.

In my opinion, the best small skimmers break down like this. (these are based on typical used prices of course, and could vary with seller);

Red Sea Prizm

BakPak , Coralife Superskimmer

Aqua C Remora (HOB) Urchin (Sump)

Tunze 9002

Those represent 4 different price tears from least expensive to most. Others might add to that, but that's an approximation of my findings .

jonboyb had a review of a deltec skimmer that he really liked.. i think it was nano skimmer shootout or something like that...

I have a red sea dlx on my 30 cube, I dont think youll be disappointed one bit

I didn't post that I liked it on my 30L in the kitchen.. it's a little loud, but i'm comparing it to no sound prior (my HOB filter is silent on that system)

I've had 2 prizms and a remora.... I still have the remora, which works like a charm. I didn't care for the prizms. They never skimmed quite like I felt they should, and they were noisy.

I'm not a fan of the Prism either - hard to dial in, noisy and prone to overflowing.

In addition to the CPR, the Octopus HOB is pretty decent too. AndyMan here did a comparison a while back. I think he liked the Octopus best.

YES, its been a while since I used a Prizm, but now that's it's mentioned, they are a bit noisey, in fact, that may have been the reason I sold it and went with a different choice.

You'll be much happier if you choose an in-sump model, or do like I did for a long time, just put a hang on back model on the side of your sump if thats possible....

If sound bothers you, you should consider a Tunze 9002. It makes virtually no sound, as the fan on my light is MUCH louder than the skimmer ever has been

the skimmer i choose will not be on the back of the tank. Im using the same sump that i had on my 65 gallon tank. I am currently running a 110 octopus recirculationg skimmer but theres plenty room for a in sump model.

I know a lot of you might say keep the octopus, and I might.
But im having to downgrade to a 25 gallon tank because times are getting hard so Im really considering just trying to find a cheaper skimmer that will do good work so i can make some money by selling my current skimmer.

anyone ever heard of an excalipur skimmer? its a in sump model.
any good?

the cup is sooo small on it though... how often do you have to clean it out ?

(my prizm only gets cleaned about every 4 days or so..)

It's been 3 days and it's half full of greenish brown yuck. I keep it tuned down fairly low though, as my bioload is next to nothing in my tank.....

I used a prizm pro for about 2 years. It was a real problem keeping it adjusted to just skim the top. I added a sump and sat it in the sump without the skimmer bucket and it worked great until the motor shaft gave out.
