Red Slime Remover

Hello everyone,
I treated one of my tanks with Red Slime Remover yesterday and now my protein skimmer is going crazy. I have tired adjusting it and still going crazy. I have foaming going everywhere. I have turned it off and still have my other filters going. I know the box instructions say to treat for 48 hrs. with no water change required. Is this safe to turn the skimmer off for 48hrs.?:shades:

I had the same problem. I turned the skimmer off for a week and have done two water changes and it's still not back to normal but skimming much better.

I did a red slime treatment 3-4 weeks ago. Did 2 large water changes since then and was finally able to get my skimmer back online a couple days ago.

If you are using Chemiclean then you are supposed to turn your skimmer off.

no the product i am using is UltraLife Reef Products.

It is normal for your skimmer to go nuts for 7-10 days after treatment. They don't address it (Chemi-clean or Ultralife), but it happens. You can raise the skimmer up in the sump (decrease the operating depth) and get it back online earlier if you want. It will eventually return to normal operation on it's own, but it takes a while.

For most of these treatments, you discontinue skimming while treating and then for 24 hours after treatment, but something in the treatment makes the water foam a lot more in a skimmer for a pretty long time. Raising the skimmer makes it harder for the skimmer to produce a foam head, and can allow you to get the skimmer back in operation a couple days earlier than you could otherwise.

i left mine off for a long time. did the treatment. left it off for 48hrs did the required 20%WC and it puked when turnned on . left off and did another 20%WC 48hrs puked again.

then I took down the 75 and used about half the water in the 100gal stock tank with working sump and the rest fresh SW mixed. it was in there about 2 weeks (did not do a weekly WC) when bringing the 120 on line mixed about 1/2 new SW and used the water from the 100g stock tank. the PS was foaming more than before the treatment but not as bad as after. i ran a remote bucket for a couple of days and had it turned down to make sure it did not overflow while i was at work.

so in short do several large WC say 50% every 2 or 3 days for week to clear it up. or add a hose to the cup and have extra replacement water and let her rip tater chip...

You want the skimmer to remove the organics that the product is killing off, so if possible, find a way to leave it on. Exporting the nutrients that fed the cyano is the name of the game.

The Ultralife product is much safer, IMO, than the Boyd product.

Thanks everyone. at this time the skimmer is off and none of the critters are showing any stress. still swimming and eating like pigs....lol

I had a nice red slime bloom after I nuked my 300 to get rid of the blue clove polyps, and I just got done doing a Chemi-Clean treatment for that a couple weeks ago. I dealt with the skimmer being unusable by doing increased water changes for that period to export the increased nutrients from the blue clove/red slime kill, also changed out the carbon a couple times post treatment as well. Skimmer is back to normal now. IME 7-10 days post treatment is when you can start using the skimmer again.

I don't recall the time frame, but I had to do three seperate 25% water changes before it was possible to adjust my skimmer to run without overflowing (this was with Chemi-Clean)... four before it was behaving normally. I did experience excellent results with it, though.

Doing water changes and added an extra filter to help get rid of this product. It does a great job in getting rid of the slime.
