I don't know anyone who has used them but from what I heard from another source they look really good after awhile....still very pricey however.

how did you fire them?

Actually, my wife has 2 large ceramic kilns @ the house. Anyone want to have reef rock (building) party?

honestly, building the rocks is great, but you should think about building little frag plugs, might be a market for it... a nice white clay should work, I checked w/ Dr. RHF a while back and he seemed to think it would work fine... just don't put that glaze stuff on them... :)

Okay, off-topic (sort of), but about aquascaping with ceramics or LR:

Some tanks I've seen recently seem to have the rock all the way up against the back glass. And I see these ceramic pieces called *back walls*. Seems like there would be a problem with weight against the back glass.

I'd love to kind of stair-step my rock from the front of my tank to the back, but I've always been worried about rocks leaned or stacked against the back glass compromising the strength of the aquarium structure.

But, then again, I guess an unsupported rock suddenly tumbling from the top middle and hitting the back glass could result in an even bigger catastrophe (i.e. armynavywife's situation).

So........... all the beautiful tanks I'm seeing in the members' gallery which seem to have the rocks going up and back against the glass. No problem? Or is that an optical illusion?

Well, hang one 10 gallon refugiums are sold on the market, seems like if you good hang one of those on the outside of the tank that rock (with the added bouyance of water) on the inside shouldn't be a problem

Another source for similiar products is http://www.aquariumspecialty.com">www.aquariumspecialty.com</a>.

There has been several threads on DIY over at RC and TRT in recent years.

There is a company on e-bay that sells different types of frag plugs. I have gotten in several orders form them. There are a few things that I would change in there products but they have 2 different round waffers and a small "rock" that has an impression in the middle to mount a larger frag.

Anyway if you are really going to make a true ceramic rocks I would be interested in joining in the party.

The force on the back glass is really minimal unless you have a large piece resting at a steep angle against the glass. The amount of rock you could stack against the back of the glass pales in comparison to the force of the water.

I've been eying these ceramic back wall items, but my only concern is dead area and detritus buildup behind them.

It would be cool to try some DIY versions, though.

On the subject of DIY, I bought a package of sculpee (similar to fimo) to make some plugs and a station. There are some folks on club-zoa that have been doing that. Not as economical as real ceramics, but everyone has the tools at home.
