i am about to buy the 20" sunpod 250W hqi (14000K)and i have a 29 gal aquarium what would i be able to keep?

you will most likely melt everything but sps and a few lps. go with the 150 watt. plenty of light for most stuff and after you ready for sps, get a bigger tank.

just my opinion but sps in a 29 biocube is asking for trouble unless you have a lot of experience reefing.

what are you wanting to keep???

I find SPS actually do very well in more situations than softies once acclimated. SPS are actually very hardy. They may not grow or color up as easily, but they are hardy corals if you meet some basic minimums. Course they become brown rocks without good light and flow easy enough.

With 250w u can grow anything that u want u just have to play with where u put the stuff in the tank to keep from bleaching out, i beleave that dorian mis read and thought that u had a 150w, i had like 200w pc lighting on my 29 and kept sps and clams with no problems for awhile 6+ months

ok so 250 is to much?
i know how to get the corals use to it i would do first a lets say 6 hour photoperiod all the way to my 8-9 hour photoperiod but so 250 is to much it is like 8.6 watts per gallon

oh and move most of them down from where they were untill they were use to the lighting gradualy of course

I have a 175MH over my 29. I can keep anything I want. My SPS does great and so do my softies...

I don't think 250w is too much "light" but heat may be a factor on a 29gal tank. You should really design your tank based on what you plan to keep in it. Depending on what biotope you want would depict what equipment you should be running.

also... try to get out of the habit of using "tricks" like watts/gallon... everything in this hobby is relative. Different things work in different applications.

so to kind of start back at the begining... what do you want</em> to put in your tank?

I'll break it out to percentages
65% sps
20% lps
15% softies

Or

75% sps
20% lps
5% softies

still not sure

You can't have too much light for SPS; at least not in the budget of a average teenager. 250 is fine for everyone including mushrooms. Light is just one thing to worry about, water quality and flow along with food is also just as important. You will also need a fan + heater to keep the temp in range, put it on the sump and the heater works when you forget to turn off ur fan on a cool day. Good luck, and welcome to the SPS cool kids metal halide 250watt+ per cubic meter league.

ya i have to order a rio 6hf(upgrade for stock pump) and 2 more powerheads i do not know which ones but some one who knows what would be good powerheads maxijet 900-1200 or something else?

Careful with the softies in that mix. Your SPS and LPS will be fine with 250w but as someone suggested you may need to accilmate your tank to it. It is VERY hard to bleach out a coral with too much light. Most bleaching comes from sudden light shifts as in going from very little PAR to really high PAR and even then you would be suprised what will come back. Softies tend to melt down when flow or light is off and I find them the hardest to keep in my mostly SPS tank.

Keep in mind as you increase lighting you need to increase flow in your tank. 250w is fine as long as you get the flow to match it. Don't worry, SPS usually give you a lot of signs they don't like the conditions before they die out.

Might I add.... That mix of softies and SPS might not make for the best mix because of the chemical warfare that could break out. There is a reason why a mixed tank is harder to keep then a specific coral biotope. If it were me, go with your second option of set ups.

The chemical warfare is one-sided mostly. Softies can nuke stonies generally speaking not the other way around. The problem with softies is when you get things growing well, they (very generally speaking) grow much faster than SPS. I grow shrooms at an alarming rate and the same can be said for zoos. These corals when aggrivated can kick off SPS poison.
