I was sold some live sand(10 or 20 lbs for my 55g) when I first started not knowing that the sand sold to me is not ideal for a reef tank or probably any tank for that matter. I couldn't tell you what kind it is, except that it it's really really fine salt so it blows all over the tank.

1 what is the best sand for a reef tank( name specs etc)
2 can I just add new sand on top of the current sand? How much should I get and with it being live sand I would need to put in all at once? If I do, do I have to fear a cycle?
3 Any suggestions welcomed

Its really according to what you want to keep. If you want fish only I would suggest good old instant ocean.

If you are keeping corals the possiblities are endless. I use Salinity

Reef Crystals, Red sea coral salt, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

:lol2::lol2::lol2:He is talking about sand not salt:lol2::lol2::lol2:

Just put it on top? Will it cause a cycle? Dump the whole bag? Scoop as much of the old out?

You could use a funnel and a pvc pipe or something to keep the sand storm down

Great idea.. Will it slush up though? No one have any thoughts about it cycling?

Shouldn't cause a cycle, but make sure you rinse really well, otherwise you'll have a very hazy tank for a while, and the sediment will settle on all of your existing rock structures and coral.

Top it with a funnel like suggested unless you want to release a lot of toxins. You could change it out but do it slooooooowly.

It blows everywhere. It would probably be an easy fix if i just got a new powerhead. One of my powerheads has the suction cups and always comes unstuck and blows sand everywhere. I
Can't have any flow pointed downward or it just blows the sand All over the rocks and corals, which is pretty annoying.

both of my powerheads are pointed slightly up and towards each other.. I had sand blowing issues when they were pointed towards my rocks.
