So, I'm guilty of impulse buying coral, as I'm sure most of are. I have also acquired live rock with zoas and rhodactis already encrusted on it, so I didn't have a lot of choice in the colors.
I'm trying for that balanced "fluorescent rainbow" look, like you see in thriving reef tanks.
I just did a quick exercise, writing ROYGBIV down one column, and putting a mark for each specimen present in the tank in another column. I also put pink in the mix. Here's what I came up with -
XXXX - Red
XXX - Orange
0 - Yellow
XXXXX - Green
X - Blue
XX - Indigo
XXXXX - Violet
X - Pink
So now when I go coral shopping this weekend, I know to look for yellow, blue, and pink instead of buying that pretty green Birdsnest or another purple something or other.
So, I wonder if anybody else plans their coral purchases and placement out in advance, and fills in the holes as they go, or what? How does one arrive at that seemingly random rainbow of colors? I'm pretty sure it's anything but random.
