So, I'm guilty of impulse buying coral, as I'm sure most of are. I have also acquired live rock with zoas and rhodactis already encrusted on it, so I didn't have a lot of choice in the colors.

I'm trying for that balanced "fluorescent rainbow" look, like you see in thriving reef tanks.

I just did a quick exercise, writing ROYGBIV down one column, and putting a mark for each specimen present in the tank in another column. I also put pink in the mix. Here's what I came up with -

XXXX - Red

XXX - Orange

0 - Yellow

XXXXX - Green

X - Blue

XX - Indigo

XXXXX - Violet

X - Pink

So now when I go coral shopping this weekend, I know to look for yellow, blue, and pink instead of buying that pretty green Birdsnest or another purple something or other.

So, I wonder if anybody else plans their coral purchases and placement out in advance, and fills in the holes as they go, or what? How does one arrive at that seemingly random rainbow of colors? I'm pretty sure it's anything but random.

I usually print out colony pictures and place them to be an idea of what it's going to look like. Funny how what's in my head always looks different when I lay it out.

I plan my purchases. I plan to purchase and then realize I can't afford it and leave. It's cheaper that way.

I color audit, but not like you do... My tank is two large islands, so I just limit each island to a balance of the colors

I usually plan to buy a certain color....oh look at that pretty....but then I get.....now that green is bright........sidetracked into........oooooohhh purple.......what catches my eye!

This is part a a presentation that the ARC hosted the author to talk about earlier this year,

not just seeing what colors are there but, like you described, contrasting colors to bring out more "pop". Also, a bunch of other cool stuff. It is in 3 parts.

This really was a great meeting I think about colors so much more now , but green is hard to get away from sometimes for me

I want to do the same thing but find myself with a lot of greens lol. Always loved seeing the zeovit tanks with so many variations of colors.

I just try not to put same colors in the growth area of same colors;)

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
