refugium sand question

I am currently in the process of setting up two tanks, a 3 gallon JBJ pico and a 39 gallon cadlight pro. I want to use black tahitian moon sand in the 3 gallon which will only be a zoa garden, but in order to do that, I had to buy a 20 pound bag of sand. Can I use the left over black sand in the sump of the 39 gallon tank? Will there be any adverse effects from doing this? I do not want black sand in the 39 display tank.
