so I'm gonna use some of this stuff for the plumbing on a build...

I have some barb fittings that will allow me to connect it to the PVC .. question...

will those fittings decrease the flow significantly ?

anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thanks,

B

they shouldn't, as long as the ID of the barbed fittings is the same as the PVC you are using.

Why the need to reinforced tubing anyways? We hardly ever deal with any pressures high enough to warrant it. It does keep its shape better, however, But barbed fittings are a real pain to get off of reinforced tubing.. I've always had to cut it of.

well the ID of the barbed fitting can't be the same as the ID of the PVC... I THINK I MAY have messed up the purchase in that I purchased 3/4 tubing because I'm USING 3/4 PVC for plumbing.

Know what I mean? The barb has to go INSIDE the tube so... it cutes the ID down some.

THAT being said The return pump is only using 1/2" and this is a BeanAnimal overflow... so I may still be ok

Edit: Oh and I'm using reinforced because I like that its reinforced :) I NEVER under build ANYTHING haha

Edit: I'll post a pic

I know what you're talking about, and it won't dramatically decrease the flow.

Having used that tubing before, I will caution you on it. First off, it's a BEAR to get to form right because it's so ridiculously stiff. Second, if ANY light hits it, you'll grow algae inside of it. Mine grew the the point that I was cleaning the hoses every month or so (which was a MASSIVE PITA) and ultimately lead to me wrapping them in aluminum foil to block the light.

I will never ever ever use that stuff again... like ever.

3/4 pipe goes into the top like a coupling then you attach the barb to the tubing.

Like this... Only secured in a more permanent way

;)

Thanks for the input man;) I'm planning to "blacken " the tubing , along with all the plumbing, once it's cut to size;)

The barb is outside of the ID of the tubing. Notice that when you put a barbed fitting inside tubing it stretches the tubing wider.

:D and we bear a striking resemblance to most of the smilies too!

Blacking it out would make sense if you can do it easily beforehand.

Those fittings do cut down on the ID a bit. I wouldn't worry about it, but if that was a concern, then you could upsize the tubing, but then you'd need a 3/4" x 1" PVC slip x slip coupler, then a 1" barbed fitting like your pic shows. That barbed fitting you are using has the same ID as a 3/4" output on a Pan World pump return, so as long as it isn't less than the pump return ID, you shouldn't see a lot of loss, I would think.

Looks like barbs are like unions. A 3/4 union has a smaller ID than the 3/4" pipe that goes into it.

Additionally, whatever you "lose" you will gain back in avoiding hard joint bends (elbows, tee's, etc).

One of the major reasons I'm trying to use it.
