Hi everyone, I'm a recent transplant to the North OTP area from NC. I have been keeping nano and pico reefs for a few years, but I still consider myself a somewhat newbie. I love the smaller tanks - just much more my style (40B and under is all I ever want to keep). I am very active on another forum online that caters to smaller reefs, but I like to join the local clubs too. I recently had to take down my last tank due to the relocation and our first little one on the way. Fortunately my job allows me to have a small desktop pico so I'm going to take anything that doesn't sell from my old set up or get totally destroyed from the move and use it towards my new pico!
I really love coral. I like fish too, but if I had to choose between coral and fish, I'd take the coral every day. I always try and set up a mixed reef and I've run all kinds of different things on my tanks, but I find that keeping it simple has been my best recipe for success. I've become a rather skeptical reefer (Rich Ross is a hero of mine in this hobby). I also really love great aquascaping. I've never really been happy with my rock work before, so in my next tanks I am going to be sure to really plan out the scape for coral placement and visual aesthetics
I love to talk microbes - I'm a microbiologist, and left a marine microbial ecology research position for a job here - and I love to talk science, music, food, motorcycles, bicycles, and of course, reef-keeping!
I'm glad to be here - it looks like a pretty active community and full of excellent reefers of all experience levels. Hopefully I'll get my pico up and running soon.
