Just a friendly reminder for everyone to check your tank temp if you haven't done so already. 70 degrees in December is quite nice though. .....suck it Florida!

Great reminder...you never know when one is going to fail or get stuck in the on position.

Just curious. Do long time reef keepers replace their heaters at regular intervals? Or do they generally last so long that they only get replaced when they fail?

I use an Apex so I don't worry that much about one failing on or not turning on as I'll notice it or get an email. Are there other concerns such as stray voltage or bursting that should be taken into account? Can a heater be inspected to look for tell tale signs that it needs to be replaced?

When I was in the navy I ran the secondary plant maintenance program for the engine room of a sub. It was certainly overkill but it kind of needed to be. I wonder if we could develop a sort of tank maintenance program that recommended certain types of inspections or maintenance to be performed at regularly scheduled intervals. Like inspect heaters quarterly, look for this, that, and the other thing. Or disassemble and clean return pump monthly. Vinegar wash the wet side of a vortech semi-annually. I think this could be a great tool to collaborate on and point newcomers to in an effort to assist them in figuring out the key things to check. Certainly every tank is different. And if a person inspects their return pump monthly for 6 months and it's always in great shape then they can always annotate that and change the frequency to something lest stringent.

I hate the cold, but do enjoy the lower utility bills. Except recently, my chiller has been running since it's been so warm :mad2:

Funny you should ask. Heaters are one of those things I replace every few years now. Had an old one pop in a smaller tank a while back. It wasn't pretty when I got home.

Im a navy vet myself. Nothing like a good ole PMS schedule to keep things in great working order. PMS certainly works! You can go on a US Naval vessel that is 30 yrs old and have an engine room sparkling clean.
