what can apex do that reefkeeper cant? if anything

I'm getting fed up with my RKL

specifics please...

This does not answer your question but my Reef Angel can do anything I want/need it to do.

Read up on RK on RC, antiquated device to say the least. Make the jump to Apex and you will never look back. I had the RK when they came out in 2004 or 2005 and they haven't changed since. Look back at the aquacontroller pro III now to the apex and it's light years ahead. Make the switch. Some LFS said they have them in stock and setup so you can play with it (forget who) but go in and play around with it. You will either leave with it or order one online I promise! Had one since he released and it's only getting better. His software sucks but that is being fixed soon. Make the leap!

I'm not familiar with RK but from what I've read, the upgrade ability and room for expansion with Apex is ever changing unlike RK. I've been using Apex a little over a year and there's already a huge software update planned for very soon. New modules are coming out all the time. You now have multiple Ecotech product control, multiple AI product control, led dimming, pump speed control, a programmable feeder, leak detection, pH, ORP, temp monitoring, breakout box that you can do endless switches with, if you have the Apex Lite or Full you can basically have endless modules, control different tanks. Phone and tablet apps. A huge network of support i think is the biggest help. with RC having a dedicated subforum, which has helped me out many times, and Neptune Systems having their own forum is a huge plus IMO.

What in particular are you looking to do with the RK that you can't or are getting fed up with?

I've been looking into getting my first controller and these were my 2 choices too. Can't the reefkeeper do all the same stuff you listed here? Except for the expandability. I know reefkeeper is limited there.

I will add that my Apex Jr has been pretty rock solid for the 2 years I've owned it. I think I had to power cycle it once because I couldn't connect to it. No issues other than that one time. The programming can be challenging at first but there is such a large support system out there for it that you can resolve issues very quickly.

When I was choosing between the two what finally got me to buy the apex was user reviews and complaints. Far fewer negative reviews and complaints for the Apex than the RK. That and the number of RK owners that sold the RK and bought Apex and were happy. Granted this was two years ago. For me it wasn't what each could do, though I don't think RK could control vortech pumps at the time, but rather the satisfaction level among Apex owners was very high.

Apex can pretty much do anything. It's constantly getting better with more and more features being added; it has a great interface (apps and online); and has one of the best customer support services in the business. You couldn't pay me enough to use RK. (I had an RK on my tank first)

to answer your question, pretty much the only[IMO meaningful] thing an Apex can do that a RKE can not is the remote access, turning things on/off from away from the unit isnt possible with the RKE.i know,i know,Apex are much more geared to the techy but jeez,i dont need my controller to brew my coffee for me in the mornings lol.

If my apex could brew my coffee it would be complete.

But in all seriousness the RKE won't be around long if they don't fix their major issues. And the biggest one is their customer service, it is hands down the worst in the reefing industry to date and there are a lot of bad ones out there.

Fill your coffee pot at night, add coffee grounds, plug it into your EB8... Program when you want the pot to turn on.... And enter into completeness! Of course it helps to be old school and use a percolater.

im not tech savvy in the least so the RKE is perfect for me.i havent a clue as to what a proxy setting is.i know im in the minority but i have never had one single reason to ever get customer service from them.it has worked as it should for years.
i know of several buddies who have had problems with their Apex so i like to joke that Neptunes customer service is so much better because they have a lot more practice.

to shed some light on this...
I'm currently running a RKL.
I really wan't to be able to monitor and control via ipad and such.
I'm also looking into cam stuff.

The RKL is a great unit, but i just feel like I'm outgrowing it a little.

Edit: BTW.. i dropped the $ on my RKL with modules... someone needs to bite on this thing :) been working fine for 48 hours after I took the NET offline

Night to day difference RKL to RKE AND you are trying to compare a RKL to an Apex. Make sure you compare apples to apples.

I have RKE on 2 tanks, and love them. Any one that says customer service is bad with digital aquatics has most likely never used a RKE. Digital Aquatics (reef keeper) customer service is very good. They have always answered every question I have ever had. I first bought an Apex and traded it for a RKE. best trade I have ever done!! And you can control pumps from the net. You can do what ever you want or need. Even control your coffee pot. RK systems are very simple to use. Apex is more complicated. It is all in personal preference if you like an easy to use system get a RKE if you like to program things and have lots of headaches get an apex.

And remember an RKL is for very simple systems that only have very little control like turning lights on and off or heaters on and off.

Have had both rkl and RKE, they are very basic and their customer support is non-existent, a simple search on RC and most of the post on RK are talking about their pitiful customer service. They even hired new mgt to try and help fix there horrible image and clearly that hasn't helped 1 bit (simple search on Rc will confirm my statements).

Glad you have had good luck with their customer support, you are in a very small portion of owners!

I have called several times with great success. And love the RKE system. It does anything I want.
And RKE is no comparison to an RKL system. I have 2 of the RKL units and they are very basic. And when I bought the apex I called 3 times in 2 weeks to get help on it and never got a return call from them. That is why I switched. And am glad I did!
To. OP. What are you wanting to do with your RK?

I have a question what will an apex do that a RKE will not??

Bruce,
I'm curious, how are you controlling pumps/lights remotely? The only App that works only monitors and i haven't figured out a way to get to do anything else.
Mine works fine, but I'd like to be able to control from my phone while away. Apex has had this! The App for DA wasn't even designed by them lol If you have a way, I'd like to know.
