Does anyone know the quality (ie: level of TDS) of the RODI water from the machines at Kroger / Publix?

thanks

yep, only RO and the TDS will vary depending on when the filter was changed last. It's generally pretty low, but you're still usually much better off on your own system.

Good to know.. I've been using the store RO water for years, but recently bought an RODI... i've been content but never thrilled with my corals (LPS, SPS) so hopefully the RODI water will make them all happier.

I think the best answer to your original question is: No. That's the problem. It varies over time, and varies among machines/stores. So if you are going to use it, check it first. Same thing goes for RO or RODI water from any source, including LFSs.

"back in the day" any Publix was under 10....kroger and 3-4 lfs at the same were much higher.

We get ~40'ish right out of the tap in Cherokee. At that level the RO side does not buy you much, considering the water used (imo). You can do very well with prefilters and DI resin only.

Check your water department's web site. Most have it listed in a report.

I'll respectfullt disagree with that approach.

At 40 ppm, you might get 125 gallons from a DI cart

With an RO, your RO water would be about 1 ppm, and you could get 4000 gallons + from a DI cart.

Agreed, the RO is a necessary component of prolonging the life of the DI resin. Reverse flushes of the RO membrane also helps prolong the life of the two.

Tagging along here. I only run a 13g tank so I've just been buying 2g of distilled a week. (~1.5 w/c and .5 for topoff) Would buying the filtered water from the machines hurt the system any? I mean, right now I spend $2 a week on water, buying an rodi system would take over a year to pay for itself (not including time and maintenance like my last system required) so rodi setup doesn't make sense for me, but if I could be paying 50c a gallon instead, that would cut my costs in half... :)

just rambling in case anyone has any input.

Its 30 cents a gallon or , dollar fifty for 5 gallons, read the thread again if you wanna know if it's any good...lol

DI only systems are an option that works well and is 100% efficient in treating water. For higher TDS sources, RO may make sense, for pretreating to reduce DI usage.

I personally don't care for the low efficiency/high waste, high cost (both up front and ongoing) and added complexity of RO.

You should evaluate 'total' costs and convenience and decide for yourselves, IMO.
